7 Tips For Becoming Stage-Ready

by Daniel Eachus, Secret City Cast Member

Improvisational comedy is a difficult art form, and there are many skills involved in attempting to master it. Here are seven important pieces of advice that I feel will take an improv comedy performer to the level necessary to be able to perform for an audience on a regular basis.

#7. Don’t try to be funny.
It’s weird that a comedian would not try to be funny, but it never works with improv. You can ruin the scene for your partners, and they may never want to work with you again. Let the comedy come naturally to the scene.

#6. Know your pop culture.
I’m not asking you to be ready for Jeopardy, but you have to be ready for any suggestions that people throw out, and most of the time, the suggestions have to do with what’s relevant in pop culture.

#5. Take notes.
Take notes on every performance you do. Make sure to list what you did wrong, as well as what you did right. Create goals for yourself and work on them, slowly, one by one.

#4. Practice, a lot.
I know it seems ironic that you have to practice an improvised art form, but improv is just that – an art form, and it takes a lot of skill honing to perfect it. Just like with everything, the more you do it, the better you will get. Improv is no exception.

#3. Confidence is key.
The audience doesn’t know if you’ve been doing improv for twenty years or if it’s your first twenty seconds onstage. If you go in with confidence, then your scene partners will feel more confident about you and put on a better show themselves.

#2. Have fun onstage.
If you’re having fun, chances are the audience will be having fun. This can be the difference from a good show and a memorable one.

#1. Do not fear failure.
When you embrace your failures, then every performance you do becomes a workshop for you. Take note of what you did right and wrong and learn from it!

Secret City - 2011 in review.

Last night we performed the last show of 2011. I always have to qualify this by saying we are back next weekend with our regular shows. As 2011 comes to a close, I can't help but think of our past and to think of our future.

Let's start with the past.  One year ago today, out cast did not know each other. We held our first audition in January 2011 at the Fullerton Marriott hotel. I took on a crew of 12 people and 7 still remain as our veteran cast.  Since then we would hold two more auditions.  We had many people come and go but I will always have a soft spot for my current cast.

Getting into our current venue was an adventure. We had a theater all locked up in Fullerton but because we couldn't come up with 30 parking spaces, we had to give up the location.  In the meantime, we began rehearsals at the Stage One Dance Studio. After talking with the owners of this fine business, we found that it made sense for us to team up and Stage One would become our home.

In June, we had our grand opening. Because of some issues with the city, we would open 3 months late. But we're grateful to be open. We've been open every weekend since. In just a few weeks, we would ultimately fall in love with the city of Fullerton.

Here are some quick highlights. We hosted a show with Improv City from Tustin. Performed our first Halloween shows. Teamed up with other local improv troupes and participated in the OC Improv Cup.

Our best achievement was being named by the OC Weekly as 2011 Best Improv Team. Funny story we didn't know about this honor for three weeks. We also have no idea when the OC Weekly was at our show. The best part was we didn't have ask you, our fans, to vote online.

That's the year in review. I'd like to thank you, our fans for being a part of the fun and supporting us with your tickets and telling your friends.  I also have to thank my cast for their support, patience and their humor.  This is everyone who has performed at Secret City since we opened:

Secret City Name "Best Improv Group" by the OC Weekly

BEST IMPROV GROUP 2011 - OC Weekly

I literally stumbled across this news, but Secret City Comics Society was named "Best Improv Group - 2011" by the OC Weekly. Needless to say, I was floored and honored at the same time. I've been to every shows of Secret City Comics Society and I don't remember anyone identifying themselves from the OC Weekly. Also, this was a decision solely made by the OC Weekly. I've never really liked the internet polls, where a publication asks fans to vote.

On behalf of the Secret City Comics Society, I want to thank the OC Weekly for this honor.

THE REALITY

Once an honor like this is received, I find myself overcome with humility. Writing this now, obviously negate our ability to use the work "humble." But we, as a team, are humbled. Our little theater is just 4 months old. The team itself is only 10 month old and as a team and as individuals, we certain do our best to put on the best show that we are capable of doing.

The reality of the situation is that Secret City is still a young team. There are still 18 games that have not been introduced to the show. Also, we are still working on our musical abilities. As much as we appreciate this honor, we know that we have not lived up to our potential for you, our fans. So keep coming back.

The reality is also that it puts us in an awkward position with our fellow improv teams in Orange County. Honestly, I wish I knew our fellow improv performers, but I'm only truly friends with ImprovCity. I've seen some of the other shows in the area and far be it from me to compare Secret City as better or worse. My hopes is that this changes with our involvement with the Improv Cup at STAGES theater on November 11 and 12.

THE FUTURE OF SECRET CITY

To our fans, by no means does this honor mean we'll get complacent. There is still more show to come, new games to play and new players to perform. You have not seen us at our very best yet. Keep coming back and enjoy this ride.

In the next year or so, our dream is to announce a new home for Secret City Comics Society and for improv comedy in Orange County. If you're interested in helping us make this happen, let us know.

Secret City Comics Society And La Habra High School Team Up To Build A Student-led Improv Comedy Program For The Coming School Year

Secret City Comics Society, an improvisational comedy theater based in Fullerton, CA, is pleased to announce La Habra High School Drama department will continue to be a part of SCCS High School Improv League for the 2011/2012 school year.

Fullerton, CA (PRWEB) August 24, 2011
Secret City Comics Society (SCCS), an improvisational comedy theater located in Fullerton, California, welcomes back La Habra High School as a part of SCCS High School Improv League for another school year.
“In January 2011, we teamed up with Secret City Comics Society to help us build our improv comedy program. SCCS came to our school, trained our students and the following month, we produced our first improv show, says Andrew Border, La Habra High School’s Improv Director. “The professional quality and energy, that SCCS helped bring to our first show, was the confidence boost our student needed to produce more shows throughout the rest of the year.
Alan Ng is the SCCS League Manager. Alan has helped other Southern California high schools in the past train a student-led improv team. This year, he is focusing his attention on North Orange County High Schools. The mission of SCCS’s High School Improv League is to provide the support and structure high school's need to allow students to gain confidence in their ability to think quickly and tell a humorous story on stage.
“La Habra High School is our program's flagship school. Last year, they gave us the enthusiasm and trust we needed to expand our high school improv league to other schools this academic year," says Alan Ng.
SCCS High School Improv League was created with the idea that performing improv comedy is a fun way for students to build self-confidence and express themselves creatively by working together making something out of nothing. SCCS hopes to add six to ten new schools this year. The high school improv comedy league allows students from neighboring schools to perform comedy together in a competition format, while building friendships through laughter.

It's Our 3rd Week

I guess this is our first official post after the opening weekend. For Bryan and myself, the road to opening day was a long one. We had a lot of red tape to cut and last minutes negotiations with the dance studio and the building owner. But we opened to a fantastic weekend.

Now we're in the unenviable position of building a following. We were told that we'd have a great opening weekend and by the 3rd week attendance would drop after all of our friends and family have come to the show. All this is true. We are in the fan building process.

For those of you who have been to the show, thank you for your support. It is greatly appreciated and we hope to see you back soon.

For those of you who have not yet been to our show, I encourage you to clear a Friday or Saturday night before we live up to our tagline "Comedy's Best Kept Secret." I can't tell you how proud I am of our inaugural cast: Alex Queen, Amy Valdez, Audrey Grace, Chuck Hayes, Daniel Eachus, Dimithri Perera, Kristen Ferris, Leah Burnette, Loren Kling, Manuel Ortiz, Marc Chester, Michael Garate, Rocco Ambrosio, Stefanie Curtis, Vivian Martinez and Jeff Parks, who was a week away from actually being in the show before he moved to Washington DC.

Our shows have been excellent for a cast that has been performing together since January. You really need to come down and see this talented group. You won't be disappointed.

We're here every Friday at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday nights at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. for now until forever.

Grand Opening Press Conference

With just two days from our grand opening, I have just posted our press conference online. Enjoy.
